Luxemburg politician. Born April 16, 1937, in Dudelange, Luxemburg.
Served as mayor (1970–89) and deputy mayor of Luxemburg (2000–), secretary-general and chair of the Democratic Party (1980–89), director-general at the European Commission (1990–99), and president of the European Federation of Liberal, Democratic, and Reform parties; was a member of the Luxemburg Chamber of Deputies and European Parliament (1969–80, 1984–90); served as vice-president of the Government, foreign minister, minister for External Trade and Cooperation, minister for Economic Affairs and Small and Medium-Sized Businesses, minister of Justice (1980–84); as a member of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party, elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004).
