Dixon, Margaret (1670–1753)
Dixon, Margaret (1670–1753)
Scottish murderer. Born 1670 in Scotland; died 1753; children: at least 1.
Hanged in Edinburgh for murder of her child, was placed in a wooden box to be taken for burial by friends; after they stopped at an inn for refreshments, opened the lid of the box and sat up; because law did not provide for 2nd executions, became a free woman who, as "half-hanged Maggie Dixon," was a local celebrity.
