Jamaican novelist. Born Nov 2, 1946, in Jamaica; grew up in Jamaica and US; educated in NY; Warburg Institute at University of London, PhD on Italian Renaissance; lived with Adrienne Rich (poet).
Writings, which are concerned with multiethnic identity and Caribbean diaspora, include Abeng (1984), The Land of Look Behind: Prose and Poetry (1985), No Telephone to Heaven (1987), Bodies of Water (1990), Free Enterprise (1993), History as Fiction, Fiction as History (1994) and The Store of a Million Items (1998); also published numerous essays in anthologies.
