Browne, Mary K. (1891–1971)

American tennis champion and golfer. Born in Ventura, California, on June 3, 1891; died in Laguna Beach, California, on August 19, 1971.

Distinguishing herself in tennis before taking up golf, Mary K. Browne is the only person to have played in championship rounds of both sports. She held the U.S. National Tennis Singles title (1912 to 1914), the National Doubles (1913 and 1914, and the National Mixed Doubles (1912 to 1914, 1921). She then crossed over to golf, reaching the final round of the USGA

Women's Amateur. In 1924, she beat Glenna Collett in the championship semifinal, then lost to Dorothy Campbell Hurd in the final. In 1925, Browne made it to the quarterfinal before losing to Alexa Stirling Fraser . In her last attempt in 1934, she lost in the second round to Dorothy Hurd.
