Adelaide de Condet (fl. 12th c.)

British patron who commanded the translation of the Proverbs of Solomon (c. 1150). Name variations: Alice de Condet. Lived outside Lincoln, England; married Robert de Condet; children: one son, Roger.

Adelaide de Condet, the lady of Thorngate Castle in England, lived just outside Lincoln, where her husband Robert was a landowner. In the early 12th century, she commissioned a translation of the Proverbs of Solomon, a moral treatise, into Anglo-Saxon. Sanson de Nanteuil produced the translation for his patron. It is believed that the work was used in the education of Roger de Condet, Adelaide's son.
