William Buckland

1784-1856

English geologist who attempted to reconcile the conflict between science and religion. Publishing works on the world's creation and the great flood referred to in the Bible, Buckland displayed a keen interest in using geologic evidence to support Christian beliefs. In addition, Buckland compared certain gouged rocks in England to similar ones in Switzerland to show that glaciers had at one time covered Scotland and England.
