Nicolas Monardes
1507-1578
Spanish botanist and physician who contributed to the sciences of botany and zoology; he classified plants and animals of the East and West Indies. He is noted for having transplanted several plants from America to Spain, and his name is used in the genus classification of plants Monarda. Monardes wrote books on plant life, the medicinal use of plants from the Indies, and a history of medicine.
