Nain Singh
1832?-1882?
Indian "Pundit" explorer who began his geographical training with the British when Tibet was closed to foreign travel. He is credited with being the first geographer to discover the famous city of Lhasa, the home of the Dali Lama. Nain Singh began his training in 1863 and, with his brother, spent many years recording important geographical information about Tibet. Some of his discoveries included the semi-prosperous gold fields in the northern region of the Himalayas.
