Marco Antonio de Dominis

1566-1624

Yugoslavian (Dalmatian) scientist and mathematician who wrote about lenses, telescopes, and tides, and developed a theory of rainbows. He studied law at the University of Padua, became a Jesuit, and taught mathematics, logic, and rhetoric at Verona, Padua, and Brescia. He left the Jesuits in 1596 and became a Bishop in Dalmatia. In 1616 he fled to England to escape the Inquisition. When he returned home in 1622, he was arrested by the Inquisition and died in confinement.
