John Benjamin Murphy

1857-1916

American surgeon who was a pioneer in surgical procedures. He began a new era in intestinal surgery by developing instruments to connect the severed ends of the intestines. He also made advances in surgery of the gall bladder as well as developing methods with which to repair damaged blood vessels. Later in his career he studied joint diseases and was president of the American Medical Association.
