Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Adolf von Baeyer

1835-1917

German chemist who revolutionized the textile industry by providing ways to produce dyes synthetically. His discovery of barbituric acid led to the development of the barbiturate sedatives. He also was influential in the development of the theory of structure of organic molecules, proposing tautomerism and the strain theory of carbon rings. He received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1905.
