Johann Jakob von Tschudi
1818-1889
Swiss doctor and explorer who made numerous expeditions to South America. Tschudi compiled valuable information on the natural history, geography, agriculture, antiquities, and commerce of South America, and wrote extensively about his travels. His published works include five volumes of Travels to South America and his Travels in Peru (1847), which was praised for its comprehensive portrait of Peru. From 1866 to 1883, Tschudi was the Swiss Ambassador to Austria.
