Gustave Thuret

1817-1875

French botanist whose greatest interest was with the group of algae called the rhodophyta, or red algae. In addition to his discovery of new species, he examined how algae reproduced. The reproductive success of algae was not well understood until Thuret described his findings. Travels to Egypt and Syria contributed to his knowledge of seaweed. One of his works was the establishment of a great botanical garden at Antibes near the Mediterranean Sea.
