George Phillips Bond
1825-1865
American astronomer who, in 1848, assisted his father William Bond in the discovery of Hyperion, the eighth satellite of Saturn, and an inner ring of Saturn. George Bond received his training in astronomy from his father and, in 1850, worked with him to produce the first photographs (daguerreotypes) of recognizable quality of astronomical objects, the moon, and a star. He succeeded his father as director of the Harvard Observatory in 1859.
