Christian René de Duve

1917-

Belgian biochemist and cell biologist who shared the 1974 Nobel Prize with Albert Claude and George E. Palade for their independent discoveries concerning the microscopic structural and functional organization of the cell. Duve identified the lysosome, a subcellular entity that contains digestive enzymes, and the peroxisome, the site of multiple oxidation reactions. Duve suggested that various diseases could be traced to defects in these cellular particles.
