Arthur Lyon Bowley

1869-1957

English statistician and mathematical economist known for his use of quantitative methods in economics. Bowley held many distinguished posts, including Professor of Mathematics, Economics and Statistics at the Universities of Reading and London, and Director of the University of Oxford Institute of Statistics. His most famous works were Mathematical Groundwork (1924), which resurrected the work of Irish economist and statistician Francis Edgeworth, Wages and Income in the UK Since 1860 (1937), and Three Studies on the National Income with Stamp (1938).
