Alexandr Oparin
1894-1980
Russian biochemist who was appointed head of the plant biochemistry department at Moscow State University and who achieved worldwide recognition for his studies which advanced the earlier work of Charles Darwin. In addition to his purely academic research, he contributed much to the Soviet economy with biochemical solutions to problems and the subsequent improvement of tea, sugar, tobacco, wine, and sugar production methods.
