Scottish anatomist and educator, known as primus, because he was the first of the three eminent professors of anatomy and surgery in the Monro dynasty at the University of Edinburgh. Educated at leading European medical schools, Monro was an inspirational teacher and gifted technician, whose career spanned nearly 40 years. He introduced advances in surgery, instruments, and dressings, and was a tireless investigator whose work sparked the rise of Edinburgh as an international center of anatomical studies.
