Turnicidae (buttonquails; class Aves, order Gruiformes) A family of quail-like, brown birds, which have short, slender bills, short, rounded wings, and short tails. Their feet have only three toes, the hind toe being absent. They are terrestrial and secretive, inhabit grassland and open woodland, feed on seeds and insects, and nest on the ground. There are two genera, with 14 species, found in Europe, Africa, southern Asia, and Australasia.
