Pataecidae (prowfish; subclass Actinopterygii, order Scorpaeniformes) A small family of marine fish that have a scaleless, smooth body, and a very long dorsal fin extending from the head to the tip of the tail. The body is deep in the head region, but tapers down sharply toward the tail. Occurring in temperate Australian waters, several species are caught occasionally by anglers or in trawl-nets. There are at least four species.
