ninhydrin
ninhydrin (triketohydrindene hydrate) A compound that reacts with the free alpha-amino groups of amino acids, peptides, and proteins to yield coloured compounds, usually blue or purple. Ninhydrin is therefore used in the chromatographic detection and quantification of amino acids and peptides.
