inselberg A steep-sided, isolated hill that stands above adjacent, nearly flat plains (the word is German, from Insel, meaning ‘island’ and Berg, meaning ‘mountain’). It may have a pediment at its base. Locally, flared or steepened margins occur. It is best developed in a savannah climate. See also bornhardt.
