formation evaluation
formation evaluation The detailed analysis and interpretation of borehole data, drilling results, geophysical downhole logs, etc., to determine the physical characteristics of the rock formations through which the drill has penetrated. This is done mainly to ascertain whether or not economic reserves of hydrocarbons are present and, if they are, to determine the most economical and efficient way to extract them. Formation evaluation is an important component of reservoir engineering design.
