Craniata (Vertebrata; vertebrates; phylum Chordata) The subphylum of animals that have a bony or cartilaginous skull and a dorsal vertebral column. It includes the fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, which appear successively in the fossil record, starting in the Ordovician. See also BONE; and CARTILAGE.
