VANCE, ZEBULON BAIRD°

VANCE, ZEBULON BAIRD ° (1830–1894), North Carolina lawyer and politician who supported Jewish rights. Vance, a colonel in the Confederate army in the Civil War, served in his state legislature (1854–61) and was governor. He went on from there to the U.S. Senate (1879–94). Vance is known to the Jewish world primarily for a lecture, The Scattered Nation (1904, 1916), that he delivered many times. It is a tribute to the Jewish people, praising their love of learning and their having flourished despite a history of persecutions.
