SANTARELLI, ANTON

Jesuit moralist; b. Atri, Teramo Province, Italy, 1569; d. Rome, Dec. 5, 1649. His work Tractatus de haeresi, schismate, apostasia, sollicitatione in sacramento paenitentiae, et de potestatae romani pontificis in his delictis puniendis (Rome, 1625), created a furor at the University of Paris because of its remarks on the power of popes over kings. Cardinal Richelieu eventually became involved in the dispute. Pope Urban VIII and Jesuit General Vitelleschi considered the book regrettable, but refused to condemn it.
