KARÁCSONY, BENÖ (Bernát Klaermann ; 1888–1944), Hungarian author. Karácsony, who lived in Kolozsvár (Cluj), was a leading social writer in Transylvania during the era of Romanian control. Though not class-conscious, he often satirized middle-class failings in works such as Új élet kapujában ("At the Gates of a New Life," 1932) and A napos oldalon ("On the Sunny Side," 1940). A megnyugvásösvényein ("For me, Tranquility") appeared in 1946. He died in Auschwitz.
