CARLEBACH, ELISHEVA

CARLEBACH, ELISHEVA , historian of early modern European Jewry. Carlebach received her Ph.D. in history from Columbia University (1986). She is a professor of history at Queens College and the Graduate Center, cuny. She is the author of two award-winning books, The Pursuit of Heresy: Rabbi Moses Hagiz and the Sabbatian Controversies (1990), which traces the upheavals of early modern European Jewish communities in the wake of the *Shabbetai Ẓevi messianic movement; and Divided Souls: Jewish Converts to Christianity in German Lands, 1500–1750 (2001), which studies the lives and writings of converts from Judaism and shows the variegated nature of the conversion phenomenon. She is also a co-editor of Jewish History and Jewish Memory, a Festschrift honoring her teacher, Yosef Ḥayyim Yerushalmi.
