Lakṣmaṇa. The half-brother of Rāma and son of Daśaratha, king of Ayodhyā. As Rāma's life-span was coming to an end, Lakṣmaṇa took upon himself the death-sentence that was Rāma's and committed suicide by drowning in the River Śarayū, whence his body was removed to heaven by the gods.
