Zanardelli, Giuseppe
Giuseppe Zanardelli (jōōzĕp´pā dzänärdĕl´lē), 1826–1903, Italian politician and premier (1901–3). As minister of justice (1881–83, 1887–91) he prepared a new penal code, which was approved in 1890 and remained in force until 1931. A democratically inclined liberal, he tried as premier to introduce social reforms and to protect the labor movement. Relations with France improved during his premiership.
