Rezzori, Gregor von
Gregor von Rezzori, 1914–98, Austrian-Romanian writer, b. Gregor Arnulph Hilarius von Rezzori d'Arezzo in Czernowitz, Austria-Hungary (later in Romania and the USSR, now Chernivtsi, Ukraine). The author of more than 20 books, mainly in German, he is a lyrical and witty chronicler of loss—loss of identity, loss of country, and loss of home in the ever-changing, war-torn Europe of the 20th cent. Among his books in English translation are An Ermine in Czernopol (1958, tr. 2012), widely considered his finest novel; Memoirs of an Anti-Semite (1979, tr. 2007), his best-known work; and Snows of Yesterday (1989, tr. 2008), a memoir of his childhood. Rezzori also acted in some 15 French and West German films and wrote several screenplays.
