Ludwigsburg

Ludwigsburg (lōōt´vĬkhsbŏŏrkh´), city (1994 pop. 86,220), Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany, near the Neckar River. It is a transportation and industrial center. Manufactures include machine tools, iron and wire goods, porcelain, and organs. There are hot mineral springs in the suburb of Hoheneck. Ludwigsburg grew around the large baroque castle built (1704–33) in imitation of Versailles by Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg. Schiller lived in Ludwigsburg from 1768 to 1773 and from 1793 to 1794 and attended a nearby military school. The city is the birthplace of the poets J. Kerner and E. Mörike, the theologian D. F. Strauss, and the philosopher F. T. Vischer.
