Escondido (ĕskəndē´dō), city (1990 pop. 108,635), San Diego co., S Calif.; inc. 1888. Located in a grain-, citrus-fruit-, and grape-growing valley, Escondido produces cereal products and has fruit-packing houses and one of the world's largest avocado processing plants. The city's light industries manufacture pens, musical instruments, electronics, communications equipment, and machine tools. Escondido is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, marked by a population increase of nearly 70% from 1980 to 1990. A wild animal park just south of the city draws numerous tourists to the area. To the east is San Pasqual Battlefield State Monument, commemorating the battle fought in Dec., 1846, between U.S. forces under Gen. Stephen W. Kearny and Californians under Andrés Pico.
