Devon cattle (dĕv´ən), breed of cattle originated in England and brought to America by colonists as early as 1623. They range in color from deep red to pale chestnut, the most popular being "ruby red." The breed was used for centuries in England for draft animals. In the United States they were raised extensively as a dual-purpose breed, i.e., for both dairy and beef production, but are no longer important economically.
