Charlton, Sir Bobby

Charlton, Sir Bobby ( Robert) (1937– ) English footballer. Charlton played for Manchester United and was voted European Footballer of the Year (1966). He was a member of England's World Cup winning team. He won 106 international caps, scoring an English record of 49 goals. On retiring, Bobby pursued a career in football administration and became a director of Manchester United. His elder brother, Jack (1935– ), also a member of England's World Cup winning squad, went into club management and led the Republic of Ireland national team with great success before retiring in 1996.
