AWILIYA
Plural of the Arabic word wali, which means "friend, dear one." As a Wali Allah, someone is a companion of God. The term has come to designate a saint or holy man. The large number of tombs of awliya in Palestine (e.g., Nabi Rubin) have become an important part of folk religion.
