la sainte ampoule the ‘holy ampoule’ or vessel containing the oil with which kings of France were anointed at their coronation; it was said to have been brought from heaven by a dove at the coronation of Clovis. The English diarist John Evelyn recorded in 1660 being shown it, but it was destroyed during the French Revolution.
Sainte Chapelle a royal chapel in Paris, noted for its stained glass, built in 1248 in high Gothic style by St Louis to house Christ's Crown of Thorns and other relics of the Passion.
