Sainte-Colombe, Sieur de or Monsieur de (real name, August Dautrecourt)

Sainte-Colombe, Sieur de or Monsieur de (real name, August Dautrecourt) , important French bass violist, lutenist, teacher, and composer who flourished in the second half of the 17th century. He was born into the minor nobility, and received training from Nicolas Hotman. After a period in Lyons, he settled in Paris in 1660 and acquired fame as a performer and teacher under the name Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. Among his notable pupils were Danoville, Marais, Jean Rousseau, and Milton. He was also a notable composer of music for the bass viol, leaving a collection of 67 Concerts à deux violes esgales in MS (ed. in Publications de la Société française de musicologie, i/20, 1973).
