Victoria, Manuel (?–1832)
Victoria, Manuel (?–1832)
Manuel Victoria (d. after 1832), governor of Baja California (1829–1831) and Alta California (1831–1832). Lieutenant Colonel Victoria was very unpopular during his brief administration for seeking to abolish the ayuntamientos (town councils) in Alta California and to replace the local politicians with military rule. Victoria was overthrown in a revolt of his own troops and immediately recalled to Mexico. His overthrow led to greater autonomy in Alta California.
