Sáenz Garza, Aarón (1891–1983)

Aarón Sáenz Garza (b. 1 June 1891; d. 26 February 1983), Mexican politician and entrepreneur. A native of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Sáenz was trained as a lawyer at the National University. He joined the revolutionary army of General Álvaro Obregón in 1913 and thereafter steadily rose in national politics. He was minister of foreign relations from 1924 to 1927, manager of Obregón's successful presidential campaign in 1928, a founder of the National Revolutionary Party in 1928–1929, and minister of public education in 1930. A powerful ally of Obregón (who was assassinated after his election in 1928), Sáenz was a prime contender for the presidential nomination of the National Revolutionary Party in 1929 but lost it to Pascual Ortiz Rubio. Although he remained active in politics, Sáenz focused on his business ventures, particularly a multimillion-dollar system of sugar mills. With the help of his sons he expanded the family business interests into paper manufacturing and aviation during the 1950s and 1960s to become one of the nation's leading entrepreneurs.
