NAFUD DESERT

a desert in northern saudi arabia.

The Great Nafud desert of the Arabian peninsula extends over some 2,500 square miles (6,500 sq. km) of sand dunes, with elevations rising to 3,000 feet (915 m). Iron oxide in the sand gives the Nafud a unique reddish color. Winter rain produces grasses sufficient to support grazing in the winter and spring. The southeast portion of the Nafud is considered to be part of the tribal territory of the Shammar bedouin, who make use of its wells and pastures.
