López, Enrique Solano (1859–1917)

Enrique Solano López (b. 2 October 1859; d. 19 November 1917), Paraguayan journalist, teacher, and politician who left a large library and archives. Son of Francisco Solano López and Elisa Lynch, he worked ceaselessly to revive his late father's reputation, which had been shattered due to his haste in bringing Paraguay into the bloody and disastrous War of the Triple Alliance in 1864. López traveled throughout Europe, and directed the conservative Colorado Party newspaper La Patria. He served as the national superintendent of primary schools (1897–1899) and was a Colorado Party senator (1912–1917) and mayor of Asunción in 1912. He ended his illustrious political and writing career as a professor at the National University.
