LENGTH MARK. In PHONETICS, the mark (ː), used after a vowel to indicate that it is long, as when the RP pronunciation of feast is shown in IPA symbols as /fiːst/. For reasons of economy and simplicity, the colon (:) is often used instead: /fiːst/. Compare MACRON. See VOWEL QUANTITY.
