Léner, Jenö

Léner, Jenö, Hungarian violinist; b. Szabadka, April 7, 1894; d. N.Y., Nov. 4, 1948. He was a student at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest. After playing in theater orchs., he founded the Léner Quartet, which made its debut in Budapest in 1919. From 1922 to 1939 it appeared regularly in London. It made its N.Y. debut in 1929, and therefter performed in the U.S. until disbanding in 1942. In was reorganized in 1945 but was dissolved upon Léner’s death. The Léner Quartet was one of the most celebrated quartets of its time, being especially renowned for its interpretations of Beethoven’s quartets.
