Campobello, Nellie (1900–1986)
María Francisca "Xica" Moya Luna (Nellie Campobello) was born in Villa Ocampo, Durango (Northern Mexico). She published fifteen poems entitled ¡Yo! under her given name, Francisca, in 1929. She and her sister, Gloria, excelled in dance and became authorities on Mexican folk dance. Nellie was renowned as a dancer and teacher and became director of the National School of Dance, which was renamed in honor of the sisters in 1989. Their collaborative work preserves indigenous Mexican dance and culture, and Campobello's memoirs of the revolution in the North provide a unique firsthand perspective. Campobello's year of birth and the place and manner of her last illness and death remain controversial.
