trophy in ancient Greece or Rome, the weapons of a defeated army set up as a memorial of victory, originally on the field of battle, later in any public place. The term was then extended to mean a spoil or prize won in war or hunting, especially one kept or displayed as a memorial, and finally a cup or other object serving as a prize or memento of victory or success.

The word is recorded from the late 15th century, and comes via French and Latin from Greek tropaion, from tropē ‘a rout’, from trepein ‘to turn’.
trophy wife a young, attractive wife regarded as a status symbol for an older man; the term is recorded from the late 1980s.
