scuba diving Diving with the use of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, or scuba. Initially developed by Jacques Cousteau, the equipment usually consists of tanks of compressed air connected to a demand regulator. This controls the air flow to the mouth. Other equipment includes a wet suit to insulate the diver from the cold, a weighted belt, a face mask, and flippers.
