-ade repr. F. -ade in adoptions of (i) Pr., Sp., Pg. words in -ada or It. words in -ata, as ambuscade, barricade, cavalcade, crusade; (ii) new F. formations, as balustrade, cannonade, fusillade, lemonade. (In ballad and salad reduced to -ad.) Of limited use in Eng. as a living suffix, e.g. blockade, gingerade; but several words formerly current with -ADO survive only with -ade.
