Rouen, treaty of
Rouen, treaty of, 1517. The defeat at Flodden left Scotland with an infant king, James V. The duke of Albany became regent in 1515 and on 26 August 1517 negotiated the treaty of Rouen with Francis I of France. Mutual support against England was to be cemented by a French marriage for the young king. The treaty was not ratified until 1522. Albany then launched an attack upon northern England which was a fiasco. The marriage of James to Madeleine, daughter of Francis, did not take place until 1537.
