Rough Magic ★★ Miss Shumway; Jette un Sort 1995 (PG-13)

Fantasynoirromancecomedyontheroadmovienostalgiafest can't decide what it wants to be when it grows up. Fonda is a magician's assistant, with latent powers of her own, who flees to Mexico after witnessing a murder. Her fiance (Moffett) turns out to be the culprit and he hires drifter Crowe to track her down. Along the way, they meet a quack doctor (Broadbent) trying to find a magic Mayan potion, a garage owner who becomes a sausage, and a shaman. Sure, it's confusing, but the performances are good, and you could always play “Name That Genre” afterwards. Adapted from the novel “Miss Shumway Waves a Wand” by James Hadley Chase. 104m/C VHS, DVD . GB FR Bridget Fonda, Russell Crowe, Jim Broadbent, D.W. Moffett, Paul Rodriguez, Euva Anderson; D: Clare Peploe; W: Clare Peploe, Robert Mundy, William Brookfield; C: John Campbell; M: Richard Hartley.
